Just a Short Drive

Between August and October 2018 we drove around Australia.  This is a summary of the drive and the different locations at which we stopped. I have written more about certain things along the way and these posts are linked below.

First of all, we started from Melbourne (VIC). Not really a stop along the way, it's just where we live!

As we headed West, our first night's stay was in Anglesea (VIC), to give us a chance to take in the sights of the Great Ocean Road.

Next stop along the way was Warrnambool (VIC), followed by Robe (SA), stopping in at Mount Gambier (SA) along the way.

In Mount Gambier we visited the Umpherston Sinkhole.

We then continued on to Adelaide (SA), the capital city of South Australia.

Driving further West, we reached Port Augusta (SA), before turning North towards Coober Pedy (SA).

We then had a long drive North to the Erldunda (NT) Roadhouse.

From there we drove East and then North to our next destination; Kings Canyon (NT).

After a three-night stay in Kings Canyon, we took the road to Yulara (NT), where we enjoyed the sites of Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

Next on the itinerary was Alice Springs (NT), which was one of the only times in the whole trip where we needed to retrace our route (albeit in the opposite direction).

Following our stay in Alice Springs, we began the three-day journey to Katherine (NT), stopping in Tennant Creek (NT) and Daly Waters (NT) along the way.

Leaving Katherine, we headed Southwest towards one of the highlight destinations of our trip; Lake Argyle (WA).

We had a wonderful time at Lake Argyle, staying in a luxurious cabin.  This was a bit of a contrast to our next stay, which was at Ord River (WA) in a Safari Tent!

From there, we started heading towards Broome (WA), with a stop along the way at Fitzroy Crossing (WA). While there, we enjoyed a cruise through Geikie Gorge.

Our stay in Broome was longer than expected, because bushfires blocked the road South.  Twice we packed and were ready to leave, but the road was closed. Thankfully the staff at the resort we were staying at (genuinely the best accommodation on our whole trip) worked things out for us to stay in the same room for the extra couple of nights.  Two extra days of lazing by the resort pool instead of driving in the Western Australian heat!

Once the roads were clear (although we saw a number of spot fires alongside the highway) we started the journey South, first stopping at Port Hedland (WA).

From there we continued onto Karratha (WA) and then Coral Bay (WA).

Originally the plan from Broome was going to be Eighty Mile Beach before Port Hedland and then staying two nights in Karratha.  Unfortunately we needed to skip Eighty Mile Beach and stayed just one night in Karratha to get back on track.

From Coral Bay we headed to Carnarvon (WA) where we visited the Space and Technology Museum.

The next location on our trip was another of our longer stays; Denham (WA). We absolutely loved Denham and the nearby Monkey Mia.

After Denham we had one of our longer driving days of the trip, heading towards Geraldton (WA). Not just because of the distance itself, but also a couple of stops along the way at Kalbarri National Park and Rainbow Jungle.

From Geraldton we headed South to Perth (WA), staying in Sorrento (WA) for a week, which was sort of like a holiday at the end of our holiday.

I said goodbye to my family at Perth Airport, as they were flying back to Melbourne, and met up with my father who was accompanying me back across the Nullarbor.

The first stop on that journey was Albany (WA), with a stop along the way at the Granite Skywalk.

From Albany we drove to Norseman (WA), stopping for lunch in Esperance.  I had heard wonderful things about Esperance and had been told that I must stop there. Unfortunately when we were there it was absolutely pouring with rain, so all I really saw of Esperance was the bakery where we ate lunch.

Crossing into South Australia, we stayed at Border Village (SA), Ceduna (SA) and Adelaide (SA), before returning home to Melbourne (VIC).
