Most of the time, we live our lives
With walls around our heart
People try to find a way in
But don’t know where to start
Some walls can be our smiles
Some can be our frowns
Our highest highs can build those walls
Just like our lowest downs
Yet sometimes we can meet a friend
Who opens up a door
And suddenly those walls we built
Don’t seem important any more
And so we walk a while
With our heart out on display
But the truth is, the walls are all still there
They haven’t gone away
And though we let them see inside
Our heart is still on guard
And if they were to walk away
It wouldn’t be that hard
Sure they may have seen our heart
But that was yesterday
“They can’t hurt me tomorrow”
At least, that’s what we say
Sometimes, though it’s rarer
A friend will come along
Who draws us out of our own walls
Their pull is just that strong
And so we leave the safety
And the comfort of our box
It’s exciting and thrilling, but scary
As each new door unlocks
But even then, although set free
Our heart can still retreat
It can return back to those walls
It can accept defeat
And so we often live this life
This cycle of the heart
Of two steps forward and one step back
Of start, then stop, then start
There are those who never really see us
And those we let inside
Those whom we let draw us out
Before we run and hide
And then there is the rarest thing
Saved for but a few
With whom your heart you trust completely
And there’s something more you do
For them, you don’t just leave your walls
There’s a greater privilege saved
You allow a piece of your heart forever
To have their name engraved
