A friendly smile while serving toast
Is all some kids will see
And so this card is telling you
you're more than that to me
And though this card is just from me
It could be hundreds more
Who wish you all these things I say
And really do adore
The friendly smile and open ears
Whenever we're in need
The open arms and loving heart
Which give out without greed
So as another year has passed
In a life of giving
I pray that there'll be many more
While in God you're living
A friendly smile while serving toast
You are a mum to all
Remember how we all love you
When you make your toast call.
Lloyd McLean (1993)
This poem was written in a birthday card for somebody who worked on camp. She was commonly known just as “mum” to many kids on camp, and one of her daily tasks was cooking the toast in the mornings and delivering it to the hungry campers.
This poem is part of the Horses and Things collection
