Olinda Creek Walking Track

For an interesting walk not too far away from Melbourne, the Olinda Creek Walking Track from Mount Evelyn to Silvan Reservoir gives variety with not too many challenging sections.

The walk starts at the Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve, and can either be done as a one-way trip (have somebody else drive the car and meet you at Silvan Reservoir) or as a loop (not technically a loop, but there are a couple of different ways to go that mean you're not completely retracing your steps).

It is a 9km - 10km return trip, depending on which route you take.

The track is a mixture of wide gravel service roads, along with some more narrow bushwalking tracks.  There are a few sections that can get muddy and slippery in wet weather.

I am not sure whether the track has been maintained since I last walked it, but when I did, a number of the signs were faded, broken or missing. It is a pity, because it gives the impression of a walk that was once well-maintained, but now less so.

The walk follows the old aqueduct in sections, as well as a few creek crossings and bridges (some more reliable than others!)

Depending on time of day, there is a relatively high amount of wildlife in the area, given its suburban location. Especially near the reserve at either end of the day you may see wallabies or wombats, and even the occasional echidna. On the walk proper, the main wildlife are the birds. Magpies, cockatoos, lyrebirds, kookaburras and more.

The Silvan Reservoir Park is made up of wide open lawns and picnic areas. Be aware that the facilities are not always open. It is relatively quiet during the week, but can get quite busy on the weekends. It is a popular place for large family gatherings.
